Gioachino Rossini’s Petite messe solennelle
Rossini described his small solemn mass as the last of his Péchés de vieillesse – his sins of old age: a last testament, composed in 1863, more than 30 years after he’d ended his career in opera. The mass was written for a small choir with piano and harmonium accompaniment. It is solemn – a serious religious work – but with delightful touches from a man who remained a theatrical composer to the end.
