Letter from Keele University concerning work to Keele Drive

Dear Residents,

I am sure you will be aware of the issues regarding the use of Keele Drive by large vehicles.

There has been another recent initiative to try and resolve the problem and, whilst the simple answer may seem to be widening the road, this is not an available option due to restrictions imposed by planning authority and local representations. However, some works have been approved and these have been underway over the past few weeks. There are major works planned for the next three days which will involve the total closure of Keele Drive from Wednesday 3rd to Friday 5th September inclusive. Due to these works, all traffic will have to use the main entrance and exit via University Drive.

Bus services will also only use the main entrance and all routes will enter down University Drive and travel around the campus anti-clockwise via The Covert and Keele Hall Road and return to the main entrance. Temporary bus stops will be in place by the Stephenson Building and The Covert. The stops at Lindsay, Keele Hall and the Students’ Union will remain in use.

The school bus operators, Scraggs, have been advised of these works but they have not advised what temporary arrangements they will operate. I would suggest that school pupils catching the bus should wait at the bus stop at Lindsay (opposite the Lennard Jones Building) as I expect the bus will return to the main entrance via The Covert as turning a bus at Holly Cross will be difficult. No doubt the driver will advise pupils what will be set in place for the remainder of the week.

Following the completion of these works additional vehicle width restrictions will be implemented on Keele Drive and signs will be installed this week. This is intended to prohibit delivery and service vehicles using Keele Drive as part of the improvement proposals. The signs will show restricted access on Keele Drive to vehicles 2.0m wide or less, except buses. It is also accepted that certain exemptions will still  be required such as occasional access for delivery vans etc. for residents whose homes are accessed off Keele Drive from time to time. Staff not resident on campus who drive larger vehicles (larger than say a landrover) are advised that the alternative route is via the main entrance onto the A525 and not direct to Keele village. Staff who arrange for deliveries are asked to liaise with the relevant companies to ensure that their drivers are aware of the restriction and the alternative access route for large vehicles. These measures are designed to try and reduce the incidence of problems with such large vehicles passing along this limited width road.

On Sunday morning, 7th September, there is another short term closure of Keele Hall Road to the rear of the Library to facilitate a delivery involving crane operation. This is likely to last until around lunchtime and the alternative route for vehicles and buses will be via The Covert. The above temporary bus stops will be in operation during this closure. The stops at Lindsay, Keele Hall and the Students’ Union will be suspended for the duration of these works.

Thank you for your cooperation.
